I received notification from a colleague regarding this webinar. It’s being held on July 15th at 10:00am PST. The Sierra Group is hosting it, and several guest speakers will be included. Accessible Information Exchange – Meeting on a Level Playing Field

The U.S. Department of Justice Civil Right Division Disability Rights Section has developed the Accessible Information Exchange – Meeting on a Level Playing Field. It provides a great overview on presenting meetings that are accessible to people with disabilities. It focuses on three main components – where the meeting is held, how the meeting room furniture is arranged, and how the meeting information is communicated. Even though the focus is people with disabilities, the suggestions will serve a wide range others, including experienced workers, baby boomers and people with temporary disabilities.

Resources: Disability Nondiscrimination Law Advisor (DNLA)

The DNLA was recently launched by the Department of Labor. It’s designed to help employers determine which federal disability nondiscrimination laws apply to their business or organization. It also helps recipients of federal funding (just about everyone reading this) understand their responsibilities under these laws. Employees, job applicants and participants in programs that receive federal funding can also use it to learn more about their rights under these federal nondiscrimination laws.

The Annual Disability Compendium brings together disability statistics published by various federal agencies in one place. It focuses on state-level statistics covering a variety topics. The Resume.com Guide to Writing Unbeatable Resumes

Lately, I’ve been doing a lot of reading and reviewing of resumes
for my Ticket clients. I recently purchased “The Resume.com
Guide to Writing Unbeatable Resumes.” What a GREAT book!
Since I’m always looking to brush up my own skills and to find
additional resources, this book had an excellent and easy to
follow step-by-step guide for creating resumes.
One of the tips I liked a lot was the use of headlines. Some of
you may use headlines in your client resumes already, but for
those of you who don’t, a headline is used instead of a resume
objective, giving your client the opportunity up front to let an
employer know how he/she can solve a problem. It’s also a
much more powerful introduction than an objective to who they
are and what they can do.
I bought the book at Borders, so I imagine most book stores, as
well as Amazon.com, will carry it. The best part about it is that it
was only a $12.95 investment. If you’re looking to build on your
skills or expand your library, this book would be a great
addition.
Disability Resources – Think Beyond the Label (SM)

According to their website, Think Beyond the Label (SM) is a partnership between health and human service and employment agencies with federal grants, coming together to build a national infrastructure and approach that connects employers with qualified candidates with disabilities. Put simply, their goal is to raise awareness that hiring people with disabilities makes good business sense. There are statewide tools and resources, success stories, and ways to “spread the word.” I’ve heard reports that they are also running a marketing campaign in select states.

It seems like there is a Wiki (or wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) for a lot of things these days Wikitravel, Wikinews, Wookieepedia…Today’s resource is a Wiki on Assistive Technology. ATWiki is an editable database of information on assistive technology. The intended audience of ATWiki includes all assistive technology users, service providers, rehabilitation professionals, educators, researchers in assistive technology, and relatives and caregivers of those that use assistive technology. Basically, anyone with an interest in the topic.
